Sense of the Country – Observers keep saying “any day now” yet fatalities continue to increase. Strange reports of Russia taking gold out of the country, while the Ayatollah is still there only add to the confusion. Violence in the streets seems to be growing, while there are also growing reports of elements of the policy and military joining the protestors. It seems like everything is hanging in the balance at this point. It could succeed, it could fail.

VENEZUELA: THE FIRST DOMINO
Sense of the Country - Events in Venezuela seem to be triggering events in other countries. But there is still a lot to be done in Venezuela. President Trump appears to be following a methodical plan for restoring Venezuela. He has had to get the interim president to be cooperative, which is still uncertain. He seems to have avoided public unrest. His first big move has been to reach out to the oil majors to come back to Venezuela. So far, they have said no. The current legal and political environment makes such a return far too risky. So, the sense is that it will be business as usual on many levels while President Trump seeks to carry out a step by step approach to getting rid of the destructive elements in the government. Gradually, the right people will be put in place and real changes can begin.

GREENLAND UGLY
Sense of the Country - A key meeting with Danish officials is scheduled for Wednesday, January 14th. The conflict in the run up to this meeting puts high stakes on the outcome. The people of Greenland appear to not be interested in becoming a part of America. But the amount of pressure President Trump is putting on them borders on the extreme. Not so vague threats of a military takeover certainly does not set the right tone for ANY negotiations. These talks for Wednesday will need to be “productive”.

CANADA
Sense of the Country - Canada looks, sounds, and feels like it is in trouble. Take your pick. Just about every issue involves something bad for Canada. This is but one example, but it speaks volumes about a nation that has lost its way. The country allows euthanasia. As the story goes the death doctor euthanized the wrong person. Talk about a medical mistake.
The point is that a policy may be accepted, but then misapplied in a destructive way. Welcome to Canada.

FRAUD EXPLOSION
Sense of the Fraud - The scope of this fraud in welfare around the country is still being determined. Forensic accountants will be very busy. But we know that it is massive. Two weeks ago, the number was $1 billion, then it was $8 billion, then $12 billion, the latest is $18 billion. That it is even bigger is possible. That huge crimes are being committed should be obvious by now. Guilty parties are even more obvious, yet the pace of prosecution seems to be nonexistent. Justice is supposed to be swift and decisive. Apparently not here.
